Biggest Bristol Employers

Ask most people what powers Bristol's economy, and you'll probably get a different answer depending on your background: tech, creative, aerospace, maybe a nod to the universities. All are fair answers. None of them is the biggest employer in the city.

Like much of the rest of the UK, it's the NHS. By a distance.

As of 1 July 2026, North Bristol NHS Trust and University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust merged into a single organisation: Bristol NHS Foundation Trust. Before the merger, North Bristol alone employed more than 13,000 people across Southmead, Cossham and community services, while UHBW employed over 10,000 across the BRI and Weston General. Put those together, and you get a single employer with a headcount north of 28,000 - nothing else in the region comes close.

The organisations that many people associate with Bristol's identity - deep tech, aerospace, the creative sector, the universities - aren’t actually where most of the region's working population clocks in each day. It's hospitals, wards, ambulances and community health teams.
