Ask most people what powers Bristol's economy, and you'll probably get a different answer depending on your background: tech, creative, aerospace, maybe a nod to the universities. All are fair answers. None of them is the biggest employer in the city.
Bristol: Impact-led Capital
I've spent years mapping the Greater Bristol ecosystem. Starting with the West of England Growth Map and a little later the Tech for Good BB open dataset in 2019, I have a slight obsession with trying to make our community more transparent and connected. I keep coming back to the same feeling: we undersell ourselves. So let's stop being modest for five minutes and look at the evidence when it comes to impact in our city -

It All Begins HereAt the UK Private Capital South West Forum last week, Hargreaves Lansdown's Chief Product Officer Douglas Abbott said something that has been rattling round my head ever since: "Let's build a UK SpaceX." He was talking about how HL recently gave UK retail investors access to the SpaceX IPO for the first time, and lamenting that British innovation too rarely turns into world-beating, IPO-scale ambition.
